Als Vorsteher der Abteilung für Wirtschafts- und Finanzfragen des EDA (1997 - 2003) nahm er an diversen internationalen Verhandlungen mit der EU, OECD und USA teil und wirkte an der Entwicklung der internationalen Finanz- und Steuerpolitik der Schweiz mit.

During his career, which has included working in London, Brussels and Beijing amongst other places, he has been dealing with SIF topic areas since 1988 and is acquainted with the problems with which Switzerland is confronted in the international financial sector. As the Head of the Economic and Financial Affairs Division of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) (1997-2003), he participated in numerous international negotiations with the EU, the OECD and the United States, and was involved in the development of Switzerland's international financial and tax policies. As an ambassador and Head of the Swiss Mission to the European Union in Brussels (2007-2012), he was involved particularly in negotiations and discussions on tax matters and institutional issues.

Son parcours professionnel l'a mené notamment à Londres, à Bruxelles et à Pékin, étapes où il s'est occupé à maintes reprises de sujets intéressant le Secrétariat d'Etat aux questions financières internationales (SFI). Il connaît donc à fond les problèmes auxquels la Suisse se trouve confrontée dans le domaine financier international. Responsable de la Division des affaires économiques et financières du DFAE (1997 à 2003), il a participé à diverses négociations internationales avec l'UE, l'OCDE et les Etats-Unis. Il a également coopéré aux travaux concernant le développement de la politique budgétaire et fiscale de la Suisse. En tant qu'ambassadeur et chef de la Mission de la Suisse auprès de l'Union européenne à Bruxelles (2007 à 2012), il a porté une attention particulière aux négociations et discussions portant sur les questions fiscales et institutionnelles.

Nel corso della sua carriera professionale, che lo ha condotto, tra l'altro, a Londra, Buxelles e Pechino, dal 1988 de Watteville si è costantemente occupato delle tematiche proprie della Segreteria di Stato per le questioni finanziarie internazionali (SFI) e conosce pertanto le problematiche con cui la Svizzera è confrontata nel settore finanziario internazionale. In qualità di capo della Sezione affari economici e finanziari del Dipartimento federale degli affari esteri (DFAE; 1997-2003) ha partecipato a vari negoziati internazionali con l'Unione Europea, l'Organizzazione per la cooperazione e lo sviluppo economici (OCSE) e gli Stati Uniti, contribuendo allo sviluppo della politica finanziaria e fiscale della Svizzera. In veste di ambasciatore e capo della Missione della Svizzera presso l'Unione Europea a Bruxelles (2007-2012) si è occupato in particolare di trattative e discussioni su questioni fiscali e istituzionali.
