The indicators relating to scientific skills should be based on the sections 'Working scientifically' and 'Designing and making', while the other indicators should be based on the knowledge content of those strand units that are included in a school's science programme and on the attitudes that are described in the aims and broad objectives of this curriculum statement. The emphasis placed on the local environment and the close links which the strand units and skills sections of the science curriculum have with the geography curriculum should also be borne in mind.

Tá an corpoideachas cosúil go maith le hábhair eile an churaclaim sa mhéid go gcuidíonn sé le forbairt iomlánaíoch an pháiste. Foghlaimíonn páistí conas caidreamh agus cumarsáid a dhéanamh lena chéile agus conas féinmheas agus muinín a shaothrú.
In contributing to the holistic development of children, physical education shares much with the other subjects of the curriculum. Children learn to relate to and communicate with each other and to develop selfesteem and confidence. They are encouraged to develop initiative and leadership and to acquire positive attitudes towards physical activities. They are helped to make informed decisions concerning a healthy lifestyle. Learning in other subject areas can be enhanced and consolidated in the physical education lesson. For instance, skills developed in the physical education lesson, such as estimating, measuring and reading simple maps, are common to other subjects.

Beidh an fad a chuirfidh gach reathaí de/di ag brath ar cathain a ghlactar agus a sheachadtar an bata. Tá sé tábhachtach go seasfadh beirt reathaithe ag an líne thosaithe; ritheann duine acu leis an mbata, agus fanann an duine eile go dtí go dtugtar an bata dó/di sula ritheann sé/sí.
Children form groups of eight or ten. They space around the perimeter of a pitch or track as in Fig. 7. The aim is to run in relay formation for a given time, e.g. five minutes, and to record how many laps they can run in that time. Two or three teams may run at the same time if space is available. The distances covered by each runner will vary depending on when the baton is received and handed over. It is important that two runners stand at the start line; one runs with the baton, the other waits until the baton is passed around to him/her before running.

Informal observation of practical tasks in science will involve the teacher in taking an active role in the learning situation. Through open-ended questions the teacher can gain an insight into the children's conceptual understanding, attitudes to scientific investigations and use of process skills. During these observation periods the teacher may make written notes so that further work for an individual or group can be planned and a record kept for future reference.

Caithfear ceann a thógáil d'éascaíocht ionramhála agus cinneadh á dhéanamh faoin méid d'obair an pháiste a choinneofar sa bhailiúchán siúd is go mbeidh níos lú deacrachta ag baint leis an gceist seo i gcás drámaíochta toisc gur píosaí scríbhneoireachta is mó a bheidh sa bhailiúchán. Mar sin féin, toisc go mbeidh bailiúcháin dá shamhail sin ag an bpáiste sna réimsí eile curaclaim chomh maith, caithfear ceist na stórála a chur san áireamh.
In drama these would be made up of writing, art work and other examples of children’s response to, reflection on, and extension of their drama experience. For assessment purposes, a representative sample of a child’s work that includes some of the best examples would be of greatest use. Decisions about what might be included will be made variously by the teacher, by the child and the teacher together, and by children in consultation with each other. In this way a valuable dimension of selfassessment will be given to the assessment of the child’s progress in drama and in learning through drama.

The child at fifth and sixth-class level will have lots of opportunities to work from observation, to use a viewfinder to draw aspects of his/her surroundings, to arrange and draw or paint a still life and to draw or paint a classmate in some detail. Devices such as overlapping and aerial and linear perspective will be used to suggest space in depth on a page. He/she will enjoy drawing and painting futuristic fashion, designing and sketching a plan for a three-dimensional model with moving parts, and inventing cartoon characters.

synthesising an account from two or more pieces of evidence. This skill requires some knowledge about the period and the context from which the documents have come. Pupils studying the evidence of the roll books and school records might be encouraged to draw on this evidence and their knowledge of nineteenthcentury schools to write an account of a school day in the 1870s.

the development of skills and increasing understanding of the activities which the children are experiencing. The development of skills forms a significant part of the curriculum for physical education, beginning through structured play activities at infant level and extending throughout the class levels. As the skills are developed there should be an emphasis too on increasing the child’s understanding of the activities he/she is engaged in. This can be achieved by adopting appropriate teaching methods where discussion is an essential part of the process.

The child's attempts to solve a problem require him/her to call on many skills. Problems in mathematics have often been seen as textbook examples at the end of a section on a particular topic. Problems in life are rarely that simple, and there is often more than one way to find a solution.

Toisc gur cóir go mbeadh an cárta próifíle mar bhonn chun foghlaim an pháiste a phleanáil amach anseo agus é/í i rang nó i scoil eile, ba cheart go gcuimseodh sé eolas faoin raon topaicí a rinne sé/sí a iniúchadh nó go gcuirfí an t-eolas sin leis.
The recording and communication of this information about the child's progress will be facilitated by the use of a pupil profile card. The pupil's profile card, which may be developed for use in all primary schools, should contain a summative assessment of the child's progress in all curricular areas and of other aspects of his/her development. The teacher's professional judgement of the child's development in science, based on the outcomes of teaching, learning and assessment throughout the year, will form one aspect of the profile card. The section of the profile card for SESE should be sufficiently flexible to allow for the highly integrated nature of the area in infant, first and second classes. As the profile card should provide a basis for the planning of the child's future in another class or school, it should include, or be accompanied by, information regarding the selection of science topics that the child has explored.

grouping children sometimes by ability and sometimes by gender. Where the ‘station’ teaching method is used (see p. 51) it is possible to group children of similar ability where this may prove beneficial. In a lesson where children are playing asmall-sided version of a game, they can be more active in the game if they are playing with children of similar ability. It may be important to form single-sex groups for some activities. For instance, in a class where girls haven’t had experience of a game such as football, it may be more beneficial if a group of girls played the small-sided version of the game together. This will encourage girls to become more active in the game situation. However, it should be remembered that many girls may be capable of joining with boys in other groups. When children are engaging in contact activities, the size of the child should be considered and children could be paired or grouped accordingly.
