Within the framework of this year dedicated to science, the Barcelona Botanical Institute pays homage to Dr. Pius Font i Quer, who founded the institution in 1934. Font (Lleida, 1888 - Barcelona, 1964) is considered to be one of the most important Catalan botanists.

En el marc d'aquest any dedicat a la ciència, l'Institut Botànic de Barcelona dedica un homenatge al Dr. Pius Font i Quer, fundador de la institució el 1934. Font (Lleida, 1888 - Barcelona, 1964) és considerat un dels botànics més importants de Catalunya. Entre 1917 i 1937 va emprendre intenses campanyes de recol·lecció per tota la Península Ibèrica i el nord d'Àfrica. Amb la finalitat de reunir un gran herbari de la Mediterrània Occidental, va adquirir importants fonts bibliogràfiques i destacades col·leccions botàniques de referència. A més, també va escriure manuals i llibres sobre botànica general, molt útils per als estudiants d'aquestes disciplines.

Mooney is considered to be one of the pioneers in plant physiological ecology and has centred his research on the study and the evaluation of phenomena which affect global changes, such as ecological invasions, the loss of diversity and the degradation of ecosystems.

El Consell de Direcció del Premi Ramon Margalef d'Ecologia 2007 va decidir atorgar aquest guardó a l'investigador nord-americà Harold A. Mooney. El guardonat és considerat un dels pioners en l'ecologia fisiològica vegetal i ha centrat els seus treballs en l'estudi i l'avaluació de fenòmens que esdevenen canvis globals, com les invasions ecològiques, les pèrdues de la diversitat i la degradació dels ecosistemes.

The book Perspectives in ecological theory (1968) and the articles "On certain unifying principles in ecology" (1963), "Life-forms of phytoplankton as survival alternatives in an unstable environment" (1978) and "From hydrodynamic processes to structure (information) and from information to process" (1985c) are classics in what concerns citations, and the first one is considered to be one of the two classical articles in the life sciences of the XX Century.

Malgrat que pocs dels seus articles aparegueren en revistes del Science Citation Index, durant molts anys Margalef va ser l'investigador espanyol més citat; compartia amb Santiago Ramón y Cajal i Severo Ochoa el ser un dels tres científics espanyols més rellevants en les ciències de la vida, d'un total de 95 investigadors de tot el món. El llibre Perspectives in ecological theory (1968) i els articles "On certain unifying principles in ecology" (1963), "Life-forms of phytoplankton as survival alternatives in an unstable environment" (1978) i "From hydrodynamic processes to structure (information) and from information to process" (1985c) són clàssics pel que fa a les citacions, i el primer d'ells és considerat un dels deu articles clàssics en tota la biologia del segle XX.
