Thomas Hoffmann: Phenex is not the result of a single idea; it was really the situation that we found ourselves in that led us to consider spinning out Phenex. At the time, we were working for a company that decided to close down its drug research business for economic reasons. So the question arose as to what to do with this particular department. Thomas Hoffmann: Wir sind nicht mit einer Idee gegründet worden, sondern mehr aus den Umständen heraus. Wir kamen aus einer bestehenden Firma, die beschlossen hatte, die Wirkstoffforschung aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen zu schließen. So stellte sich die Frage: Was macht man mit dieser Abteilung? Bleibt das Know-how dieser Abteilung liegen, oder fängt man es auf und macht einen Neuanfang?

Quality-oriented genomics databases, curated phenotype databases, material collections for proteomics, data from more than 2,000 patients (a very high figure for such 'exotic' diseases) and a unique selling point– the foundations are there and the infrastructure for further clinical research (academic and industrial) has been established. These are excellent conditions for biotech companies and also for pharmaceutical companies for the developing and marketing of drugs in this niche market. The basic concept is very simple: to expand our strengths, find niches, and exploit them through existing know-how. In the end this would mean, something not mentioned by Ludolph, pharmacological innovation returning to Europe.
