Another of our speciality areas is the provision of technical assistance and advice to improve & optimise the performance of residual waste treatment facilities. A key basis for this is the characterisation of the input waste stream, achieved using a mobile waste analysis unit. This in-house designed station is stored within a standard shipping container and can therefore be economically transported over long distances (road or sea).

In 1997, TBU was engaged by the World Bank to investigate the waste disposal arrangements in South East Anatolia and subsequently designed a network of transfer stations for upgrading the collection systems. 10 years later a similar project is performed on behalf of ADB Asian Development Bank in Sindh / Pakistan. In northern China TBU senior staff provided technical input to the Shenyang Urban Planning Project (~ 7 Million inhabitants). Other waste management planning / consulting currently takes place in Syria, and SE Europe. For the Bulgarian MoE a domestic waste prognosis tool was developed. In the course of the privatisation of the MSW services in Abu Dhabi (UAE), system weaknesses were identified, and the collection system and fleet evaluated.

...not a large project, but one all the more exciting as it deals with questions and issues that often arise in international consulting – and remarkably often for projects in emerging and developing countries. At such locations one may assume (rightly so!) that a focus on prototype technologies is something which should not be top priority. However, the compulsive concept (the “King Midas-Idea”) to convert waste into money, via the intermediate forms raw materials and/or energy with no residue produced, is sometimes pursued with a level of enthusiasm which is typically inverse to tangible technical expertise (referring to waste treatment beyond laboratory scale) of the respective technology supporters. This applies in central Europe equally to in emerging and developing countries. As a consultant, to provide meaningful input to such projects is perhaps our business’ greatest challenge, and requires not only well-grounded engineering know how, but also tactful instinct, pedagogical-didactical skills – and some luck, as in the present case.
