One immediate and positive result arose from one of our meetings in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, on 29 February 2000, with representatives of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Biological Station, the Huntsman Marine Science Centre, the Atlantic Salmon Federation, the New Brunswick Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, and the New Brunswick Salmon Growers Association. Prior to the meeting, the representatives had spent a good deal of time identifying and agreeing on science-based issues. Subsequent to the Committees visit, the five groups agreed to meet again, and this eventually led to a proposal for collaborative research to better understand the ecosystem of the Bay of Fundy, where most of the provinces salmon production originates. We were later informed that this spirit of cooperation would not have happened without the stimulus provided by the preparations made in advance of the Committees visit. Such dialogue between various interests should be encouraged in order to create more cooperative relationships. We hope that more of this will take place in future.
