The answer is generally no. Most provincial statutes treat archaeological discoveries as being of such significance that they deserve to belong in the public domain: they declare that archaeological finds will not belong to the landowner or the finder, but rather to the provincial Crown.78 The effect is essentially the same in the territories. However, there are two important exceptions: Ontario79 and Quebec.

There are two areas for data entries on the Image Catalogue Form. The entries at the top serve to index the form itself. The entries in the columns serve to index the individual images. Each roll of film (or memory card/image data storage medium) used requires the completion of a separate form, or a series of paginated forms if all the data cannot be entered on one form. Every exposure, by which is meant every full advance of film or record, requires an entry on at least one separate line of the form. A sequence of three bracketing exposures, for example, requires three separate entries on the form. Where data of an exposure or record is duplicated in the following exposure, ditto marks can be used.

The Cottonwood Trail is an 83 km ¾ loop that can be started at either Kathleen Lake or the Mush Lake Road. The trail varies from 4-wheel drive road to single track; it passes through stands of spruce and poplar; crosses two mountain passes, and follows through open meadows. For the adrenalin thirsty, the highlight of this trail may be the adventurous creek crossings. A variety of wildlife including Dhal sheep, mountain goat, grizzly and black bear, ptarmigan, owl, moose and others inhabit the area. The trail is marked with km posts in most areas, and is relatively easy to follow. There are few bridges on this trail so hikers must be prepared to wade creeks in order to cross. During high water, it is recommended that people leave from the Kathleen Lake side of the loop, as Victoria Creek can be challenging and sometimes impassable. This hike requires 4-6 days to complete, but longer trips are possible. The Cottonwood Trail can commonly be hiked from June to early September.

When it's time to hang the food, a pulley system makes the task much easier. After experimenting with several varieties of pulleys, I've settled on a pair of high-quality pulleys designed for sailing; they withstand the salt-water environment without corroding. I prefer pulleys that are intended for holding over one hundred kilograms on a continuous basis. (Many pulleys are designed for lighter loads, or for holding momentary loads; heavy overnight loads would flatten their bearings.) The top block has three pulleys; the bottom has two pulleys plus a becket (a loop to fasten the end of the rope).

Beavers are nature's engineers. They design and construct their dams and lodges, and then work steadily to maintain them in good order. The beaver's body is well-suited to its environment. “Beavers close off their ears and nose while they are underwater,” explains Holdaway . “They also have a clear protective membrane that covers their eyes. With webbed feet and a waterproof coat, they're well-adapted to live in water.” Most people know that the beaver slaps its tail on the water as a warning of danger. However, as Holdaway explains, the broad, flat tail has two other major functions. “Beavers use their tails for steering, much like a paddle in a canoe, as well as for balance when they are standing and chewing.” These members of the rodent family are adept chewers, and can gnaw through a 15-centimetre tree in 15 minutes.

Banff’s caribou tell a story of ecosystem connections in which elk and wolves have key roles. Wolves tend to focus on the park’s more plentiful prey, such as deer or elk, but hunt caribou when the opportunity arises. High elk numbers support high wolf numbers, which affects caribou in two ways. First, larger wolf packs consume more prey, including the caribou they occasionally encounter as they travel throughout their territory. Second, when plentiful prey such as elk summer in caribou range, wolves follow and linger longer, increasing the number of opportunities for wolves to encounter caribou.

The new Visitor Centre is also the result of some unique partnerships. The Town of Battleford is creating an exhibit in the building that will present the history of Old Government House (the seat of territorial government in Battleford), which tragically burned down two years ago. Joint funding from Parks Canada, Natural Resources Canada, and the Town of Battleford also paid for construction of the building. The result of these partnerships and new technology is a building that has modern energy-saving features coupled with a design that blends into the space around it. This innovative building will enable Fort Battleford NHSC to commemorate the past while respecting the present and looking ahead to the future. Sustainability involves thinking not only of the present but also the future and considering how actions today will affect people tomorrow.

All of the trapping, curing, tanning and preparation of the hides was done by the Mi’kmaq. The French acquired the furs through a bartering system where they traded European goods in exchange for the pelts. The main fur that the French were interested in acquiring was the beaver. The fur of the beaver was used to make hats. There are two layers of fur on a beaver. Once the furs arrived in France, the long outer “guard hair” would be shaved off. Underneath there is a shorter layer of hair that would be shaved off as well. This short hair has microscopic hooks which makes it stick together with ease. This short hair would be heated, wetted and pressed to make felt. Out of this felt, the hat makers would fabricate felted beaver hats which were water proof and very popular among the gentlemen in France at the time.

Each year the moonworts have the ability to produce a single leaf. The leaf has two sections, a reproductive spore-bearing part and a photosynthetic part. But moonworts can be fickle. They have the ability to skip a year and not emerge to produce a leaf. This disappearance in some years contributes to their reputation as rare.

There are two distinct races of killer whale off the coast of British Columbia. «Transients» occur offshore and feed mainly on other marine mammals, including dolphins, sea lions, seals and other whales. «Residents» are common near shore in summer and feed on fish, primarily salmon. Killer whales, also called orcas or 'blackfish', live in tight associations called pods which are matriarchal in nature - in other words, the whales remain with their mother for life. Orcas are one of the most widespread of cetaceans, occurring in all the world's oceans, including the Arctic and Antarctic.
