In architecture, historical forms were discarded in favour of the streamlined and functional forms of Modernism. It was a sensibility that quickly crept into art and advertising, giving shape to a distinct mass culture. Futurism of one sort or another informed most aspects of culture and politics, a futurism based almost entirely on material advancement. Television became the great disseminator of this vision, a medium that was both a product of technology and a promoter of it.

As the Francoist troops entered the city in January 1939, the sculpture and medallion were removed and the obelisk rededicated to the fascist victory by incorporating a female statue created by Frederic Marés. But Viladomat's sculpture and Pie's medallion, instead of being destroyed, were hidden in a municipal warehouse on Carrer Wellington throughout the Francoist dictatorship, alongside other statues that had been removed from public spaces representing Catalan-nationalist figures. It was not until Pasqual Maragall became mayor of Barcelona that these works were returned to public streets and squares. A large monument designed by the architects Albert Viaplana and Helio Piñón, integrating Josep Viladomat’s sculpture and Pi i Margall's medallion, was unveiled in 1990 in the Nou Barris district.

Antequera Town Hall Tourism Department. This convent, which was not finished until 1580, belongs to the community of the Carmelites Mothers of the Old Observance. The exterior is quite sober and the only outstanding element is the access arch where the sprandels are decorated with an embossed Virgin and a Saint Gabriel forming the scene of the Annuntiation; a vase of lilies completes the motif. In the 18th century, two sections with peculiar windowed balconies and a belfry were constructed. The interior repeats the model of Moorish church of Granada with only one hall nave and the High Chapel up on steps. Both spaces are covered with Mudejar coffered ceilings. The High Chapel’s coffered ceiling has octagonal plan and is supported by plasterwork shell squinches, showing stars and cross braces on the gables and double beams in the angles. From the middle, it hangs a graceful pine cone where the stalactite works have been replaced by oval and pearl forms. It is also worth noting the footings and architraves which support the High Choir on the base, as well as its lattices. The original reredos of the church are completely missing, except for the remaining reredos of a Saint Elias. The main sculptures are one work by Saint Andrés de Carvajal and a really beautiful image of the Virgin of Carmen, a very lively Rococo composition made by the Diego Márquez de la Vega, from Antequera, in 1787. Before finishing the visit, we should stop to watch the convent’s façade at the Tintes street, with a very intricate Mannerist style composition that reminds the designs by Melchor de Aguirre. This façade has been restored in 2012 by the Historical Heritage Department of the City Council of Antequera.

Buildup and fluctuations of Xiphinemabakeri Williams nematode populations and disease severity were determined in seedbeds of Sitka (Piceasitchensis (Bong.) Carr.), and white (P. glauca (Moench) Voss) spruces and western hemlock (Tsugaheterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) and Douglas-fir(Pseudotsugamenziesii (Mirb.) Franco). Population levels were the same on spruces and hemlock, and on coastal and interior forms of Douglas-fir. Numbers of total and female nematodes, and gravid females peaked in September, and May to June, respectively, then declined in late winter and early spring. No post-oviposition increase occurred in early developmental stage nematodes and the nematode overwintered primarily as eggs and juveniles. Total and gravid female population peaks correlated positively with higher ambient temperatures, and the September peak in total nematode numbers coincided with new root-growth of Douglas-fir. Soil moisture had no direct effect on nematode populations. Root disease severity of all seedling species was related to numbers of nematodes per seedling root system throughout the first and second growing seasons, but soil nematode populations for previous and current sampling dates were not correlated with current disease severity. A negative correlation was obtained between nematode numbers per cubic centimetre of root and shoot growth of Douglas-fir.

De retour à Girdwood pour les derniers jours de l’expédition, les conditions ne furent pas plus clémentes. La pluie et le temps froid ne nous ont pas aidés à bien profiter de nos explorations à vélo, mais les nuages se sont dissipés le dernier jour.

Heading back to Girdwood for the last couple days of the trip, the weather locked in once again. Rain and cool temperatures didn’t make for ideal exploring conditions, but on the last day the clouds lifted. We made our way up towards Crow pass, where there's a 24-mile trail all the way down to the town of Eagle River. The terrain went from alder-thick singletrack to rugged, open alpine trails. The epic riding in the Chugach Mountains was a great way to round out the adventure.
