On January 6th, I attended the 20th annual model parliament in Ottawa.  Laurentian is one of only two universities privileged to hold a model parliament in the House of Commons each year. A total of 125 students from Sudbury and Barrie spent the day discussing, debating and negotiating important issues.  Our Chancellor, Aline Chrétien, served as Governor General and read the Speech from the Throne in the Senate chamber. We also had over 40 alumni who participated in the Alumni Model Parliament taking place at the same time at Senate. This experience was very gratifying for me as I watched students ask questions, challenge issues and passionately discuss local and global topics. I would like to thank those who graciously gave their time to make this a rich and memorable experience for the students particularly; former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, former Deputy Prime Minister Sheila Copps, Sudbury M.P. Glenn Thibeault, and Senator Marie-P. (Charette) Poulin. I would like to congratulate those who organized this year’s program as well as those who have contributed to its success over the past twenty years. I’m looking forward to next edition on the Hill! Many students have mentioned to me how the Model Parliament was one of their best moments of their university experience at Laurentian.

In 2009, after reading the newspaper on a Saturday morning, Mr. Ritchot decided that the communication between the authorities and the young drivers was not getting through.  Being himself a passionate of cars and racing, he founded Team M.A.S.C. (Mastership, Automobiles, Safety and Control).  This organization is focused on experience sharing with young drivers. Every year, the total number of drivers on the road increases, as does the number of vehicle related fatalities. Whether the primary cause of the incidents are speeding, careless driving, stunting, or improper vehicle modification, the consequences are always severe. Incidents caused by circumstances such as the ones listed above can be avoided by educating young drivers on how to prevent these dangerous situations. Members of Team M.A.S.C have the privilege of participating in events that are focused on car control and safety awareness. These events allow drivers to share their expertise and experiences with fellow members while having fun in a safe environment. As the M.A.S.C community grows, so does the number of safety conscious drivers who make the roads in our local communities a safer place!

Researchers found that not only the main active ingredient THC (Delta 9-Tetrahydrocannabinol), but also CBN (Cannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol) play an important role in producing or modulating the psychoactive effects of marijuana. In addition, these cannabinoids seem to have interesting medicinal effects. Other cannabinoids which may affect the high are THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin) and CBC (Cannabichromene). Scientists are only just beginning to understand how these cannabinoids affect our brains and bodies, and they still do not know much about the other cannabinoids – over 50 of them – contained within the plant.

The MRA seals a long-standing collaboration between the OIQ and the competent authorities in France by integrating the professional qualification recognition processes in France and Québec. Thanks to this agreement, engineers who have graduated in Québec have the privilege of obtaining recognition of their title in France and may register in the French Directory of the CNISF. Even though the French professional system is quite different, the title of Québec engineering graduates will have the same value as the title of engineers who have earned their degree in France. The procedures for an engineer who graduates in Québec to register in France will also be simplified. The underlying goals of the MRA are protection of the public, maintenance of the quality of professional services, compliance with the standards for the French language, fairness, transparency and reciprocity.

Ex-England footballer Jimmy Greaves once said, “it’s a funny old game” when asked about his thoughts on football. Support for the same sport can differ no matter where you go. The reality is that when we consider this sport between Britain and Poland you can see such vast extremities. Britain is the quintessential modal of how to run the sport. A business machine, watched by millions around the world and commanding the highest prices and money in all aspects of the game. The infrastructure is in place so that millions of kids can play everyday and in any place around the country. Our supporters privileged to watch only the finest. In Poland the opposite is true with so many problems and obstacles still to overcome. However, even though the contrasts of the sport are so different this doesn’t dissuade the average football fan from watching their team and nor should it. Just because the money is not so high doesn’t mean that the football played is of a terrible standard. The passion of the fans is testimony to how football is the true global sport. Even after Euro 2012 has been and gone the faithful Warsaw fans will still support their team and still dream of better days. The mark of a true fan is one who supports his team through not only the golden era’s but also through the low ebbs.
