Manufacturers who implement the IS-95 and IS-136 standards rely on the complexity of the system as a means of providing security, as was done when AMPS service originated in the 1980's. Today's communications systems are indeed faster and more sophisticated, but so is the equipment available to intercept these communications. Many commercial companies have developed receivers and equipment that can easily intercept cellular communications. Therefore, the apparent complexity of a system is not sufficient to provide the security required to protect designated (protected) or classified GC information; approved cryptography and a key management system are other components essential to the protection of this information.
