That project was successful, and the results have been summarized in papers submitted for consideration at an upcoming CSAS encounter protocol meeting to identify coral, sponge, and hydrothermal vent VMEs in Canada. This work was also used in the General Status review under SARA of Coral in the Pacific waters of Canada. The proposed work is the next step in the application of SDMs and other tools in an EAM designed to protect VMEs in Pacific Canada (with emphasis on coral and sponge). The results will provide managers with 1) a review of EAM approaches to the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem functions (including options for encounter protocols); 2) a comparison of methods to identify VME; 3) a framework with which to evaluate different EAM strategies; and 4) recommendations for an EAM designed to protect VME and framework to move forward.
