Le petit rorqual est une espèce cosmopolite. Il entreprend régulièrement des migrations des
zones polaires

The minke whale has a cosmopolitan distribution. It makes regular migrations in the summer as far north and south as ice areas. In winter it seeks the warmer waters where procreation takes place. The minke whales in the northern and southern hemisphere do not mix. It occurs most often alone, but small groups are also common. It is often seen inside the fjords and bays.

The global poster and the 6 posters of the continents are derived from daily data collected from 1998 to 2008 by the VEGETATION instrument onboard the satellite SPOT-4 and SPOT-5. The images were processed to highlight at best the diversity of the areas. The bathymetry and the polar regions are in turn derived from the NASA project Blue Marble next generation.

The map which Hipparchus presents to us bears an erudite name: stereographic projection. We should say that stereographic projection is not much used in maps today, except to represent polar zones. But we will see little by little in the course of this film that this projection has considerable mathematical interest and that it is in fact extremely useful.

The fin whale (balaenoptera physalus) is the second largest whale in the world, after the blue whale (balaenoptera musculous). Fin whales are characterized by fast swimming speeds and streamlined bodies. Adult fin whales reach physical maturity at 25 years of age, and range in size from 20-27 metres, and 60-80 tonnes, with northern hemisphere populations tending to be slightly smaller than their southern counterparts. They can live for up to 100 years, and females reproduce at two to three year intervals. The species is often confused with blue, sei and Bryde's whales due to similar sizes and characteristics, though fin whales can be distinguished by the asymmetrical pigmentation on their lower jaws, which is dark on the left and light on the right.

One reason for this pattern could be that the tropics receive more energy from the sun, allowing for more biomass (the amount of living matter); unfortunately more biomass doesn't necessarily need to lead to the increase in species seen. Another reason could be that the more polar regions are periodically ravaged by glaciers, resulting in a loss of species. The rate at which new species evolve is slow enough that the polar areas never manage to recover enough to reach the maximum number of species before the glaciers return.
