In the light of the new EU guidelines for water management in the framework of Natura 2000, the project is an important example of the renaturation of a river. Natura 2000 is the official designation for rape coherent network of protected areas that is being created within the European Union on the basis of a nature protection guideline Established in 1992. Its aim is the cross-border protection of endangered wild and domestic species of plants and animals. In 1992 the European Union, by signing the Biological Diversity Convention, undertook to protect the biological diversity of species and habitats. The Raba riverbed is one of the protected areas listed in Natura 2000.

The goal of the second project, Development of nature conservation and of protected areas in the Slovak Carpathians, is to improve the protection and sustainable usage of natural areas and habitats in the Slovak Carpathians. This project will draw up guidelines for the future development of these areas and promote knowledge transfer. The local population will therefore benefit twice over: along with improving the environment, the tourism infrastructure will be strengthened. The Slovak Carpathians will consequently become more attractive as a tourist region and the local population will benefit from additional income opportunities.

Ecosystems suchs as forests, natural habitats and protected areas fulfil a range of functions. On the one hand, they serve as recreation areas; on the other, they bring economic benefits, through timber or tourism for example. On top of this, they also perform a valuable ecological task by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen and, naturally, ecosystems sustain innumerable forms of life. However, as a result of continuing climate change and the impact of other environmental factors, the very existence of many of these ecosystems is under threat. This applies to Slovakia too: 40% of the country is covered by forest and a further 30% of the land area is made of up a network of natural areas. In many rural areas of Slovakia a large part of the population is either directly or indirectly engaged in the timber industry or tourism. Consequently, forests and natural areas in Slovakia are synonymous with jobs. As part of its EU enlargement contribution, Switzerland is supporting two projects in Slovakia to protect these areas.
