We did this because these methods are scientifically sound and because they had already been agreed to by both the provincial and federal governments for use in areas that are slated for land development.

Well, it's not just one species. If you include all the Nooksack dace, you would probably--I don't know the percentage--capture a third to a half of what was required for Salish sucker. Then there's a whole list of other species SARA listed that use the same habitats. There's tremendous overlap, especially in riparian areas: Pacific water shrews, red-legged frogs...they're all in the same places.

Some concerns have been raised with some of the testing of some products and the amount of distance required, especially when you are testing new products out in the field, from other fields, as well as from residences and riparian zones. I'm just wondering what the policy is on buffer strips.

I don't think I can for that one. I was just using that as an example in the context of filling an information gap. It is a riverine health assessment. Again it will be the freshwater example of watershed planning, including managing the adjacent riparian areas and agricultural woodland areas to make sure that the flow rates for that system are beneficial to all species living in the watershed. I don't have a specific recommendation on that one.

In riparian zones, that can become a problem in itself. Because there is no competition on those grass species, undesirable species start to exist, which could essentially cause more soil erosion and have more waste products--nutrient values that are harvested and removed from the site. They get into the waterways and add nutrients, which causes greater difficulty with species recovery.

In addition to that, we're trying to better quantify inputs of septic systems to nearshore areas. We're focusing for the moment on Lake Huron, where there are nearshore algal growths and beach closures that we think might be due to septic systems. We hope in the future to do that on Lake Winnipeg as that initiative increases, and also on Lake Erie.
