In the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, one mitigation measure that has been implemented to reduce interactions between giant scallop fishing gears and juvenile American lobster habitats is the designation of buffer zones of varying depths (10 to 20 meters) in the near coastal zone. Preliminary evidence suggests that this measure also protects deposition areas of egg-cases and inshore nursery habitats of Winter Skate and other species, in addition to preserving the American lobster habitats.

If you must have a lawn (over the septic bed, for example), use natural methods to maintain it and avoid chemical fertilizers and weed controls. Try leaving the grass clippings where they fall to mulch and fertilize the sod, but only if the lawn is far enough away from the water that the clippings will not be washed into the lake. Let the grass grow at least seven centimetres long between trimmings to conserve soil moisture. Another option is to let the grass grow all season; knocking it down once a year with a trimmer or scythe will keep trees and shrubs out, while permitting wildflowers to put down roots.

To address environmental concerns that may arise from the intended use of a product, the Pest Management Regulatory Agency also makes recommendations for restrictions on use that would mitigate any risks identified. The Basin Head MPA Regulations provide legal protection for the Irish Moss and its habitat through zoning principles and a general prohibition against the disturbance, damage, destruction, or removal of the MPA living marine organism and their habitat. As shown in the figure below, there are three management zones established: the Inner Channel (Zone 1), the Lagoon (Zone 2), and the Outer Coast (Zone 3). Zone 1 receives the highest level of protection, while Zones 2 and 3 acts as buffers to protect the integrity of the dune structure and the more sensitive Zone 1 area.

As well, the root systems of vegetation along the banks hold the sides together and stabilize the slopes. Environmentally, the stalks and leaves from the different types of plants slow down runoff and act as a filter by trapping sediment, pesticides and other pollutants - improving the quality of water entering the drain.
