Je crois que de nombreuses initiatives à l'échelle locale et régionale, y compris les zones visées par le règlement de revendications territoriales autochtones, sont d'excellents exemples de personnes collaborant dans un but de durabilité à long terme et de conservation avec, tout au long du processus de cogestion, un apport important pour ce qui est de planifier et de décider des choses à long terme.

I'm not saying it's impossible. I think many of the initiatives at the local, regional level, including aboriginal land claim agreement settlement areas, are great examples of people working together with long-term sustainability and conservation in mind, and with significant say, through the co-management process, concerning planning and deciding on long-term things. Just because there's one economic project there right now.... Of course, our industrialized urban society is in a big rush.

Je tiens également à signaler—et mes collègues ne peuvent me contredire—qu'en ce moment même, tous les traités qui sont en vigueur dans diverses régions du pays depuis des décennies vont être renégociés un après l'autre en ce qui concerne les terres de la Couronne qui entourent les zones visées par ces traités et qui n'y sont pas mentionnées.

I want to also let you know—and my colleagues here cannot disagree with this—that as we speak, all across this country where treaties are in fact in place and have been for decades, one by one, two by two, and three by three, they're being opened up again for further negotiation of the unmentioned crown land that surrounds these treaty areas. As we speak, Treaty No. 8, just to the north of us, is being opened up again for further negotiation.
