Nunavut interests have been involved in the Northern Shrimp industry since 1987, with the issuance of 1.5 offshore Northern Shrimp licences to the Baffin Region Inuit Association, which are currently held by Qikiqtaaluk Corporation. Through the establishment of Nunavut as a distinct Territory and the implementation of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreements, the federal government has made a commitment to sharing quota allocations in Nunavut's adjacent waters directly with Nunavut interests, through the NWMB. This level of commitment was strengthened with the federal government's acceptance of the recommendations of the Report of the Independent Panel on Access Criteria in November 2002. In total, of the 28,300 tonnes of Northern Shrimp allocated in SFA 0, 1, 2, and 3 today, Nunavut interests have a 38% share and these interests hold only a 34% share of the total P. borealis allocations and 52% of P. montagui.
