Reminiscent of box-shaped village villas, the six apartment buildings blend harmoniously with the gently sloping topography of the site in the hilly Zürcher Oberland region. The peaceful location adjoining an agricultural zone creates a natural atmosphere, which is reinforced by the landscaping concept with park-like open areas. The 2½- to 5½-room apartments of the development impress with their spacious and subtle floorplans. The bright, open spaces are cleverly configured to create private areas to retreat to, while the numerous window fronts command expansive vistas. The earth-coloured facades with their elegantly framed "vantage-point" windows add a stylish note to the buildings.

At the end of the second competition stage, the judging panel recommended further development of the "silberpappel" scheme submitted by neff neumann Architekten in partnership with Schmid Landschaftsarchitekten, both based in Zurich. In the panel's opinion, this design team delivered the best solution to the complex tasks posed by the competition brief while still meeting the specified quality requirements. The next step will involve refinement of the neff neumann Architekten scheme as the basis for the associated site masterplan and statutory planning procedure. The project is scheduled to go on site in 2019 and the first apartments are likely to be ready for occupation in 2021.

The Vulcano area on Vulkanstrasse 110 in Zurich Altstetten was once home to the automotive and motorboat factory Vulcan AG, which was already benefitting from the location's good rail connections in 1880. With the Vulcano project, Altstetten will now receive a new landmark that outshines everything. The impressive urban project benefits from excellent public transport links, as well as from being clearly visible, thanks to its prominent location. Edwin Müller, general project manager of the developer CSA RES, re-emphasizes the benefits of this location: "Altstetten is an up-and-coming district of Zurich. In recent years, we have seen modern commercial properties as well as high-quality living spaces being developed here thanks to continuous improvements in the working environment. The innovative project Vulcano benefits from this dynamic environment and also makes a valuable contribution to further increasing the attractiveness of this trendy quarter."

In order to meet the ambitious objectives as fully as possible, an architecture competition was launched by the Public Works Department of the City of Zurich in 2008. The participants had to submit an urban design and residential concept as well as proposals for an individual building. The demanding economic and ecological standards of the building cooperative also had to be taken into account. The prize jury assessed the content and potential of the 25 projects entered – under the scrutiny of interested members of the cooperative. The winning urban design project by Zurich architects futurafrosch and DUPLEX Architekten in conjunction with Müller-Illien Landschaftsarchitekten persuaded the jury through the generous scale and dynamism of the buildings and types of dwellings it offered. Cooperation and dialogue were also a recurring theme in the architecture. The design of the residential buildings was revised and implemented with the help of the other competition winners Müller Siegrist Architekten, Miroslav Šik and pool Architekten, as well as the building cooperative. Building types designed by all the participants were integrated into the plans for the housing estate, with the individual buildings being optimized and coordinated.

The new urban district in Bülach North will have an exceptionally high density by Swiss standards and, as such, will present a mixture of challenges and opportunities. The creation of a compact, well-designed residential development with a homely feel and high urban quality of life depends on a combination of factors: outstanding architecture, efficient transport systems, ample public open spaces, high standards of living comfort, secluded areas to retreat to, and space for encounters and communal activities. In the future Glasi-Quartier, residents’ needs will always be the main focus. Thanks to the broad mix of residential, commercial and service space, the new urban district will be highly attractive for its future residents, offering infrastructure for their daily needs. By offering diverse types of accommodation, the project – which includes some 450 affordable rental apartments plus 104 owner-occupied units – seeks to address large sections of the population, create a broad social mix and make the new urban quarter in Bülach North one of the most sought-after living and working locations in the Zurich Unterland region.

The new urban district in Bülach North will have an exceptionally high density by Swiss standards and, as such, will present a mixture of challenges and opportunities. The creation of a compact, well-designed residential development with a homely feel and high urban quality of life depends on a combination of factors: outstanding architecture, efficient transport systems, ample public open spaces, high living comfort, invigorating private retreats and communal facilities. The residential and industrial accommodation must also be intelligently configured so as to generate an interesting mix of uses, lend the neighbourhood a certain self-sufficiency, and provide future occupants with useful amenities and an attractive range of services. The remodelled Vetropack site will cater for all these criteria while according top priority to the needs of residents. By offering diverse types of accommodation, the development scheme – which includes some 400 affordable rental apartments – seeks to address large sections of the population, create a broad social mix and make the new urban quarter in Bülach North one of the most attractive living and working locations in the Zurich Unterland region.
