In Finland, the Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences has launched the Wood Academy project with the help of €640 000 of ESF co-funding. It aims to generate new talent, new products and more innovation in the wood industry sector while creating a centre of excellence for R&D on wood products and construction. Research Director Marja-Liisa Neuvonen-Rauhala believes training can reduce unemployment and help people find new skills and jobs. Centred on the town of Kouvola, the project will also encourage entrepreneurship to help create new businesses to replace older industrial activities that are in decline.
