Here before us is one of the most ancient Roman arches, built by Augustus in 27BC as the honorary gate to the city on the Via Flaminia. The monument has only one arch, and is decorated with tondos in relief with divinities, columns and a tympanum. The top of the arch, originally occupied by a statue, was covered in battlements in the Middle Ages.

The densely populated town of Andria has many precious medieval monuments within its aristocratic nineteenth-century plan. The church of Sant'Agostino, of which we can admire the splendid portal, was built by the Teutonic cavaliers in the thirteenth century, when these places were a starting point for the crusades.

We are climbing the slopes of Monte Subasio. In the middle of a dense forest of holm oaks and oaks Saint Francis used to withdraw to pray in a small oratory, which in the fifteenth-century was transformed into the present-day Eremo delle Carceri. A pleasant walk through the woods leads to the grottoes of various hermits.

This place, protected by rocky walls that drop to the sea, was chosen for a Bronze Age settlement.
We are entering Monteriggioni, in the gentle landscape of the Sienese hills. The town recalls the Middle Ages with its thirteenth-century walls and no less than fourteen square towers. Towers that Dante compared to the giants of hell, at the time when this fortified site was the Sienese outpost against the Florentines, repeatedly passing from one to the other.

The Castello Estense in Ferrara is the most representative monument in the city. It was built magnificently in the form of a defensive fortress, it was embellished in the late fifteenth century by the Este family, who transformed it into a royal palace. Like many other cities in the Italian provinces, Ferrara was once the capital of a small kingdom.

Founded by the Greeks of Siracusa, Ancona was later an important Roman city. Two important remains date from that period: the Amphitheatre and the Arco di Traiano, dominating the new port constructed after the Dacian Wars. From the amphitheatre, located on the hill that was home to the Greek acropolis, it is still possible to see the steps of the cavea and, moving through the adjacent streets, the magnificent basaments integrated in the medieval houses.

Già nell'VIII secolo avanti Cristo arrivavano, in questo scalo piceno, i mercanti greci e in breve Numana fu occupata dai Greci che controllavano Ancona; in seguito divenne un'importante cittadina romana.
At the southern foot of Monte Conero lies the beach of Numana, one of the two bays formed under the cliff and overlooked by the historical town centre, known as Numana Alta. Prior to the eighth century BC, Greek merchants came to this Picene harbour and shortly afterwards Numana was occupied by the Greeks who controlled Ancona; later it became an important Roman town.
