Could a mid-size car really combine luxury and sports performance? The 3 Series swept away any doubts or reservations with an eye-catching turn of speed. The design of the interior, with its driver-focused cockpit, made a particularly positive impression on the motoring press and customers alike while adding a dose of the sumptuous and exceptional to this class of car. The fourth-generation model went a step further in ensuring luxury was on the menu; its “top down” approach stipulated that new technologies from BMW’s premium models should be offered as a matter of course for the 3 Series as well.

I wish Jack had lived long enough to see its restoration completed, but in the absence of that I'm glad he got to bask in a bit of the limelight thrown off by Elvis' 507, once we'd established its provenance and published the story. After that, BMW was able to officially verify the car as having belonged to Elvis, and we eventually corrected the provenance of 70192, as well. That car was sent straight from the factory to New York in late 1958, while Elvis was in Germany. It had indeed been given by Elvis to Ursula Andress in 1963, but Elvis probably never drove it. Fortunately, its current owner is more interested in its ex-Ursula provenance than any Elvis connection.

Arnd thinks of his 1939 BMW R 35 as a work of art – and riding on it is like the creation of a sculpture. However, this was not how the R 35 was viewed when launched in 1937. Indeed, it was used primarily as a reliable courier and training machine for the police and military. Its reliability and robustness earned it many fans, which resulted in sales of over 15,000 units by 1940. Add in the models produced at the Eisenach plant after the war, and that figure rises to almost 100,000 units. This makes the R 35 the most successful model in the history of BMW Motorrad.
