Bei diesen Fällen kann das Medium bei der Bildung vom Feuerschaum nicht verwendet werden. Zur Hilfe kommen dann Produkte wie Löschpulver oder verschiedenartige Gase (z. B. Kohlenstoffdioxid). Sie wirken auf die ähnliche Weise wie Feuerschaum, d.h. sie stoppen die Zufuhr vom Sauerstoff zum Feuer, indem sie eine Schicht (Pulver) oder eine Wolke (Gase) bilden, und zeigen auch eine chemische Hemmungswirkung bei der Brandlöschung.

There are also places and types of fires where the presence of water is not desirable. These include, among others, the vicinity of electrical equipment or areas where materials easily damaged by water are stored. In such cases, water cannot be used to form foam. For this reason products such as fire extinguishing powders and various types of gases (e.g. carbon dioxide) are used. They work in a similar way to the extinguishing foam, i.e. they cut off the flow of oxygen to the fire by forming a coating (powder) or cloud (gases), and also exhibit chemical inhibitory effects when extinguishing a fire. Unfortunately, they also have disadvantages – among others, they show difficulty when using in unfavourable weather conditions, such as strong wind.

Istnieją również takie miejsca i rodzaje pożarów, gdzie nie jest pożądana obecność wody. Należą do nich między innymi okolice urządzeń elektrycznych lub obszary, gdzie przechowuje się materiały łatwo ulegające zniszczeniu pod wpływem wody. W takich wypadkach nie można zastosować tego medium przy tworzeniu piany gaśniczej. Na ratunek przychodzą wtedy produkty takie jak proszki gaśnicze oraz różnego rodzaju gazy (np. dwutlenek węgla). Działają one w podobny sposób do piany gaśniczej, tzn. odcinają dopływ tlenu do ognia poprzez utworzenie powłoki (proszek) lub obłoku (gazy), a także wykazują chemiczne działanie inhibicyjne przy gaszeniu pożaru. Niestety, mają one też wady – między innymi wykazują trudność przy użyciu w niekorzystnych warunkach atmosferycznych, takich jak silny wiatr.
