Mit Hilfe der „Finite Elemente Simulationdes Spanbildungsprozesses konnten die Auswirkungen der Bohrergeometrie (Verschleißzustand), des Reibverhältnisses zwischen Span und Bohrer (Werkzeugbeschichtung) und der Prozessparameter (Schnittgeschwindigkeit und Vorschub) auf die erzielte Spangeometrie (Spandicke) und die erzielte Bohrerbelastung (lokale Spannungen und Temperaturen, globale Kräfte) entkoppelt betrachtet werden. Diese entkoppelte Betrachtungsweise ermöglichte in Verbindung mit gezielten experimentellen Untersuchungen ein besseres Verständnis der kritischen Prozessparameter für die Spanbildung und den Spanbruch.
Using finite element simulation of the process of chip formation, it was possible to observe the individual effects of drill geometry (state of wear), friction between the chip and drill (tool coating) and process parameters (cutting speed and advance) on the chip geometry produced (chip thickness) and the stress imposed on the drill (local stresses and temperatures, global forces). Combined with specific experimental investigations, this method of analysis provided a better understanding of the critical process parameters for chip formation and breakage.

Beyond its implementation, a procedural step might contribute to the technical character of a method only to the extent that it serves a technical purpose of the method. The board was persuaded that simulation of a circuit subject to 1/f noise constituted an adequately defined technical purpose for a computer-implemented method, provided that the method was functionally limited to that technical purpose. Specific technical applications for computer‑implemented simulation methods were themselves to be regarded as modern technical methods which formed an essential part of the fabrication process and preceded actual production, mostly as an intermediate step. In that light, such simulation methods could not be denied a technical effect merely on the grounds that they did not yet incorporate the physical end product.

In atherosclerosis, the leading cause of death worldwide, deposits build up in the blood vessels. This leads to calcifications that appear similar to bone in radiographs, in stark contrast to the blood vessels that in turn consist of soft tissue. Previously, soft tissue right next to calcifications was either barely visible or entirely invisible in X-ray images. Research teams from three European countries have developed a method to measure the calcified and narrowed blood vessels. The data of these constrictions can to be used to simulate blood flow and allow the determination of the local shear stress. This is increased at the constrictions and forms a basis for the development of mechanosensitive nanocontainers, from which vasodilating drugs release locally and specifically.

In der Vergangenheit wurden nur wenige Softwarelösungen zur Simulation des Fließpressens von Sheet-Molding-Compounds (SMCs) entwickelt. Erste Ansätze basierten auf 2D bzw. 2.5D Modellierungsansätzen ohne das Fließen in Dickenrichtung zu berücksichtigen.
In the past, a limited number of software tools were developed to simulate the compression molding of sheet molding compounds (SMC). First attempts were based on 2D or 2.5D modeling approaches without considering the flow in the thickness direction. Based upon the simulation of injection molding, there are still only a few specialized software tools commercially available which can simulate compression molding in a 3D format. The material models used in these software solutions, however, are based purely on fluid shear (viscosity) and are not capable of describing the complex behavior of a SMC material consisting of high fiber volume content and long fiber reinforcement. In many current solutions the model for the fiber orientation is based on the Folgar-Tucker equation. Another possibility to describe the fiber orientation in a SMC material is through the explicit modeling of the fibers as beam elements. Here the fibers can be represented with customized lengths and effects like fiber breakage and interaction can also be taken into account. However, this mesoscopic modeling approach demands very high computing resources and computational times. As the specialized software tools are restricted with respect to the available material models and methods, general FEM-Software such as ABAQUS® or LS-DYNA® provide a great advantage for the development of customized user defined material models for CF-SMC materials. With multi-physics solvers and the necessary tools for creating user-defined material models, most of the necessary factors and effects can be taken into account. Figure 3 shows the conceptualization of this model for a user-defined material created in LS-DYNA®. Most of the mechanical and thermal effects influence directly the velocity gradient which plays an important role in the Folgar-Tucker equation. In most recent software solutions, SMC compression molding is typically thought of as a viscosity based fluid mechanics problem. However, with the increasing use of high fiber volume content CF-SMCs, it is better described as a solid mechanics problem. The flow of the material is therefore based on an elastoplastic deformation instead of a purely viscosity based formulation. In addition, some CF-SMC materials show an anisotropic behavior which is based on the local fiber orientation. Therefore, the elastoplastic formulation should be orthotropic with directional scale parameters described by the fiber orientation tensor of the subsequent time-step. Wh
