The maternity ward at Bottom Hospital near the "old town" of Lilongwe is a simple L-shaped brick structure built for the local people in 1936 under English colonial rule. It has been officially renamed Bwaila Hospital, yet even today it is only the poorest of the poor who continue to come here to bear their children. The hospital delivery room is Dr Tarek Meguid's place of work. It is his job as a gynaecologist and CIM expert to care for the 30 to 40 women who give birth here each day. He not only provides actual medical assistance: he also attempts to raise the problems of medical care to the political level and thus to bring about long-term improvement of the situation. In Malawi there are only 13 gynaecologists for 12 million inhabitants. Much gynaecological / obstetrical work is carried out by "clinical officers" who take on medical care and medical specialist tasks without having a medical degree. In the capital, four million women are under the care of three gynaecologists, who deliver 12,000 children each year. Thus in addition to his normal activities as a gynaecologist and obstetrician, Dr Meguid's tasks include the training of interns – both students and doctors. According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, some 1,800 out of 100,000 pregnant women in Malawi do not survive childbirth. In Germany, in our time, only nine women per 100,000 die in childbirth. The current numbers in Malawi are nearly as horrifying as European figures in the Middle Ages. Added to the traditionally low status of girls and women in African society, a major problem is the emigration of medical experts to other countries.

Some people have completely opposed my way of tackling the topic. I think that my approach was somewhat provocative. The visitors were confronted with the direct experience of producing a child’s toy weapon. I didn’t exhibit any weapons that I had collected but tried to motivate visitors to engage direct with building weapons. Some people were of course shocked but primarily their curiosity was aroused. Many were suddenly reminded of their childhood weapons and could understand my observation of the strong presence of toy weapons in childhood. In my workshop, weapons were fashioned by children and people over sixty years old. Each age group could interpret the subject and particularly older generations who had experienced war at first-hand represented interesting viewpoints which were not always pacifist ones (which I had expected). The results were very different in their complexity but were often reminiscent of the shape of real weapons. There were often conversations on the topic, whereas some people without enquiring about the background went straight to the work bench and started making a weapon. It was particularly interesting when a family with children came into the room. Some children were not allowed by their parents to make a weapon; the opposite example however was a father who spent almost two hours in the workshop with his daughters and designed a mechanically complex weapon with them. In principle, I think it’s wrong to suppress playing with weapons during childhood. My father helped me make weapons and yet, at the same time, I was brought up to be a pacifist. This means that I think I understood from an early age that war is a terrible thing. I went to political exhibitions with my parents and made a poster against the war in Iraq in my fifth year at school. This sounds as if I was a model child but that’s how it was and it was done of my own free will. Parents should not forbid anything but explain things at the same time.

He readily submits to Maikan whenever he get's pinned down by him. On the other hand, it is kind of a different story with his sister. He does not submit readily to her, but tries to steal her food from time to time. He gets less and less successful, since she is not giving in that easily to her big brother and he needs to watch out that Maikan won’t steal his food, while he is trying to get Ela’s.

Even if the smartphone analogy seems far-fetched with respect to charging, it draws closer when you think more about the subject of networks. There is a reason why the two Competence Centers are working hand-in-hand on visions that bring the smartphone, electric engines and future mobility together. For one, the smartphone should help to search for and reserve charging stations for the vehicle. This makes sense because this service could produce new business models, which make the integration of electric mobility in our everyday lives more attractive to providers in the energy and automobile branch. Secondly, we are already thinking about the urban trend of intermodal traffic. This refers to transport using different modes of transport or, to put it more simply, independence from the car. We can especially observe how the smartphone has changed the use of transport in major cities. Taxi services via the app, combinations of bus and rail transport with rental and car-sharing vehicles and even car and bike-sharing are already reality in urban areas. This communal mobility gives the urban infrastructure and the providers and manufacturers a new challenge - what about the parking situation, where can the vehicle be fuelled and charged and especially: how are these systems and providers linked to each other? These are the questions being dealt with in the innovation network, together with politics, industry, science, urban planners, energy suppliers and operators. The EDAG Competence Center already proved that solutions are possible several years ago with the "EDAG LightCarSharing" idea - a vehicle that is tailored to the needs of car-sharing and currently serves as a proposition for the development of new concepts and their integration in future urban transport scenarios.
