The Master’s programme is particularly concerned to enable students to do independent academic work. The programme corresponds to the usual international criteria. It attaches particular value to the practical relevance of economic research on financial and economic policy issues, also in order to enable graduates to enter the field of policy advice. A meaningful selection of complementary electives and seminars leads students closer to research issues. In keeping with the emphases of the AWI, research is planned in the areas of Behavioural Economics, Economic Growth and Development Policy, and Environmental Economics.

It is an important element of the cooperation between the three institutions. The research seminar covers a broad spectrum of current economic research, combining the strengths of the participating institutions in their respective areas.

CSI is a private, non-profit research institute, based in Vienna, Austria. On basis of sound socio-economic research cross-sector activities in education, training, policy consulting, networking and the organisation of conferences are performed by CSI. Work is organised interdisciplinary and situated extensively within international networks. European issues play an important role in the work of the CSI, emphasising EU-enlargement and socio-economic and cultural sustainability of the European Union and its current and future member states.

In this type of research, politics determines what goal should be reached. In Switzerland's case, the goal is a reduction of the CO2 emissions. Economics can show the way to implement that goal in a cost-effective manner. That is not easy and a lot of countries get it wrong. If you implement a policy with the aim of cutting back on carbon, it means that you must put a price on carbon. Efficiency requires that everyone in society faces that same price for carbon, and we let the market determine who are the winners and losers in such an exercise.
