Berlin, ville de taille moyenne du sud-ouest de l'Ontario, comportait une importante population de Canadiens d'origine allemande et de nombreux mennonites, dont l'glise pacifiste s'opposait au service militaire.
Berlin, a moderate sized town in southwestern Ontario, was home to a large population of German Canadians and many Mennonites, a peace church that opposed military service. It became a focus of public unrest because of its name and the assumed disloyalty of many of its German or pacifist residents. Zealous patriots removed from its pedestal a bust of Kaiser Wilhelm II located in the city's Victoria Park and threw it into adjacent Victoria Lake. Soldiers of the local 118 th Battalion ransacked and vandalized German businesses.

For much of the 1920s, Canadians observed the date with little public demonstration. Veterans and their families gathered in churches and around local memorials, but observances involved few other Canadians.

un moment o la plupart des glises, dont sa propre glise mthodiste, soutenaient activement la guerre et le service militaire, Woodsworth devint clbre pour avoir refus d'utiliser sa chaire pour encourager le recrutement.
Popular Methodist minister James S. Woodsworth was an outspoken critic of the war and, later, of conscription. At a time when most churches, including his own Methodist Church, actively supported the war and compulsory service, Woodsworth received great notoriety for refusing to use his pulpit to encourage recruitment. This anti-war stance cost Woodsworth his position as Secretary of the Canadian Welfare League, and he left the Methodist Church over its lack of commitment to pacifism and other social issues, including working class poverty.
