De honderden scholieren van de Kampala Secondary School komen niet meer bij van het lachen, wanneer ze op het podium een als zaadcel verklede acteur het hiv-virus over zien brengen. Toch is dit een serieuze aangelegenheid. Op het podium werken Oegandese acteurs samen met theaterstudenten van de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht. "Oegandezen zijn dit soort theater niet gewend, maar ze begrijpen het wel", vertelt Dirk Bruinsma. Twaalf studenten, leden van de theatergroep Zoet Zuur, waren deze zomer in Oeganda om theater te maken over aids.

"This is 'intercultural wrestling'", says John Kayongo in perfect Dutch. Ugandan-born Kayongo teaches at the HKU, and leads the group that visits his native country. "Here we see a mix of two different worlds. In Uganda the actors generally come up with a story line, then divide the roles to the actors and they can start performing after that. In The Netherlands we are a lot more used to think thematic. On the other hand, we use more symbols. In Holland it is normal to act an abstract thing like a sperm, while here that is considered very strange."

"Het is een interculturele worsteling", vertelt John Kayongo in vloeiend Nederlands. De van oorsprong Oegandese Kayongo doceert aan de HKU en heeft zich opgeworpen als begeleider van de groep in zijn vaderland. "Hier zie je een mix van twee verschillende werelden. In Oeganda wordt een plot afgesproken voor een verhaal, daar worden de acteurs bij gezocht en dan kan er direct gespeeld worden. Terwijl wij in Nederland veel meer gewend zijn om te denken in thema's en om symboliek te gebruiken. De Nederlanders vonden het helemaal niet vreemd dat iemand als spermacel het toneel op komt, de Oegandezen juist wel."
