On 13th July 2016, EBA members had the opportunity to discuss with Mrs. Ivanna Vladkova-Hollar, in the context of the visit of IMF’s mission in Moldova during 5-15 July 2016. The mission initiated discussions on the possible IMF program, as to agree on a comprehensive set of policies that would maintain macroeconomic stability, improve governance and transparency in the banking sector, and foster sustainable and inclusive growth. Through this joint meeting with the private sector representatives, Mrs. Vladkova-Hollar gathered insight on what works, what doesn’t and what consideration IMF should build in their subsequent discussion with the authorities.

The Vice-minister of Information Technologies and Communications, Mrs Dona Şcola, described the last evolutions in the area of ICT in the RM and the investment opportunities. Currently the mobile telephony penetration in Moldova is 110%, whereas 90 % of localities of the RM have the optic fibers coverage. ICT sector represents 10% of GDP, the biggest share being given to communication. Among the biggest investment advantages in the ICT sector the following are worth being mentioned: developed infrastructure, well trained staff and the tax incentives provided to the ICT employers.

A company which commercializes fruits and vegetables at an international level was visited, and this was confirming the importance that implementation of the Global Gap certificate is a basic requirement for commercializing the agricultural production on the EU market.

The event was attended by sectorial companies, public authorities, diplomats, potential investors, as well as regional leaders of the automotive-components industry. The event highlighted the opportunities brought by this sector in trade and the national economy, the facilities offered by Moldova, the current legislation amendments, and many other aspects to consider when investing. The event started with the welcome speeches of Pavel Filip, Prime Minister of Moldova, and Pirkka Tapiola, Head of the EU Delegation. The Prime Minister underlined that such an event is a proof of the industrial revival that is currently taking place in Moldova and mentioned the efforts that are being undertaken to adapt the legislation to the needs of the private sector. Mr. Tapiola mentioned how the automotive sector became a pillar of the Moldovan economy in just 10 years, with most of the investments coming from or though the European Union. His Excellency also accentuated the role of the European Business Association in actively lobbying the right changes and for pushing the business climate in the right direction.
