The common denominator of these three eminent European institutions’ exhibitions that complemented one another was the works that use diverse modes of expression by means of video art, the contemporary technique that continuously renews itself. While Centre Pompidou’s selection from its New Media Collection was presented under the title “Contemporary Perspectives”, ZKM’s selection of new and interactive media works was presented under the title “Touch me İstanbul”, and MUSAC’s selection comprising video and installation “An Interpersonal Journey”.

Regarded as the “chronicler of our age”, renowned British photographer Martin Parr’s photographs constitute a turning point for Magnum Photos, a photographers’ co-operative that derive from the deep rooted tradition of documentary photography. Martin Parr presents what is rather familiar in a new and striking way. Contrasting the style of traditional Magnum photographers, Parr’s images are not alien or distant or mysterious or sad. To the contrary, the scenes presented in this striking collection are rather familiar, of everyday life and commonplace at the first glance. Differentiating from the other Magnum photographers with this characteristic, Martin Parr is however on the other hand a typical Magnum photographer when the intensity and gravity of the awareness he creates regarding the global capitalist culture is taken into account.

Elektrik üretiminin ve İstanbul’un farklı semtlerine dağıtımının denetlendiği Kontrol Odası ise ayrıntılı kumanda aygıtları ve teçhizatıyla bir bütün olarak korundu. Uzun zaman alan ve titiz bir emek gerektiren koruma çalışması boyunca, kontrol odasında kaybolmuş ya da tahrip olmuş parçalar yerlerinde işaretlendi, mevcut parçalar temizlenerek pasa karşı korundu.

The Control Room, which oversaw the generation of electricity and its transmission to different districts around Istanbul, has been preserved intact, complete with elaborate control devices and equipment. The “Uncharted” exhibition included a selection of contemporary artworks involving the large-scale use of digital and interactive media. The exhibition featured works both by renowned and as yet unknown avant-garde artists and groups of artists from all over the world. Interactive and immersive qualities of the works were well to the fore to enable the visitors to discover spectacular forms of artistic expression and radical changes in the relationship between the visitor and the work of art. As a module presented by ZKM, “YOU_ser: The Century of the Consumer,” curated by Peter Weibel and Bernhard Serexhe, showed the first contours of this new user-based art through changing art works and positions. Works by young artists, especially who participated in different contexts to the media festivals initiating technological advancements on digital platform, were exhibited in the module curated by Ahmet Atıf Akın on behalf of santralistanbul.
