Ümit Deniz Efendioğlu holds a BSc in Economics from the Middle East Technical University and an MA in Development Economics from the University of East Anglia in the UK. From 1995 to 2001, she did postgraduate studies and worked in several projects at the United Nations University Institute for New Technologies (UNU-INTECH, UNU-MERIT in its current name) in Maastricht, the Netherlands, on demand, new technologies and employment. In 2001-2002, she worked in the area of technology and development as an Economist at UNCTAD in Geneva, Switzerland. Her career at the International Labour Office (ILO) started as an Economist in the Employment Sector from 2003 to 2005 and continued in the Office of the Director-General from 2005 to 2009 at the Headquarters of the ILO in Geneva, Switzerland where she worked on such issues as employment policies, labour standards and globalization as well as on integration of economic and social policies, gender and Arab states. She started working as Senior Employment Specialist in the ILO Office for Turkey in Ankara in 2009. She was the Acting Director there since 1 April 2011 and has been appointed as Director as of 1 October 2011.
