Man makes extensive use of microorganisms. For example in food preparation and preservation for humans (eg bread, cheese, beer, wine, dairy, and meat) and animal (grass silage). Bacteria and fungi are also widely used to produce antibiotics, vitamins and enzymes. Another important application is the purification of wastewater. Microorganisms are capable of breaking down pollutants in contaminated water and can neutralize pathogenic bacteria. This way the waste water can be safely discharged and may be reused.
