The first version of Fisherman's Friend, was a tincture that James Lofthouse bottled in vials. Since the vials broke too quickly on the high seas, the chemist came to the rescue by thickening the tincture. The cold-stirred preparation could now be pressed flat, punched in lozenge form and dried slowly. The first lozenges were sold under the name "Mr. Lofthouse's throat and chest lozenges". Over time, today's globally known and unified brand name: "Fisherman's Friend" evolved from customer requests such as "a bag of fisherman lozenges " or "an ounce of friends".
