‘Meeting Point’ is the second collaborative exhibition between Yay Gallery and Cuadro Gallery following ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being’ at Yay Gallery, which exhibited the work of four artists represented by Cuadro Gallery from the Middle East and North America, in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The next grade –– `Refraction` presents absolutely different palette, different story, but still it deals with the dialogue system, still it takes you beyond the bounds of physical reality. The project named Refraction could be introduced as exploration of the colour phenomenon, but nature of Hagverdi’s this work doesn’t allow it. He gets going on a hunch, by feel; he enters the dialogue with texture, substance of materials, the dialogue with lines and layered colour stratums, ‘tuning’ himself as a receiver for new ‘airs’ of colours.

Rabouan Moussion Gallery is glad to present Farid Rasulov’s first solo show in France. After the success of his "Carpet Interior" installation at the 55th Venice Biennale, the azeri artist will present an initiatory journey, offering a discovery of the perception of a man faced with an aesthetic paradox: a total installation, carpeted with oriental motifs. Rasulov transforms typical Western spaces with irrational and provocative designs, like a dialogue between East and West.

My practice reflects the interweaving of photography and painting by hand, figures and backgrounds, as well as perspective and inverse perspective. Furthermore, I am exploring the dichotomies of hidden versus revealed, spontaneous versus constructed, past versus present, personal versus social, juvenile versus mature and dangerous versus harmless.

Huseyn Haqverdi, Honorable artist of Azerbaijan from 2003, graduate of the Azimzadeh Baku State Academy (1975) and the Mukhin St. Petersburg Academy (1980). The artist works with various materials and various genres including sculpture, painting, drawing and monumental art, gravitating to large forms. He is the author of a sculptured statue of the Virgin Mary in Baku Cathedral, a mosaic panel on an epic theme installed at the Sangachal Terminal, the memorial bas-reliefs dedicated to the artist Javad Mirjavadov in Baku and to the composer Kara Karayev in Moscow.

Rashad Alakbarov, who lives and works in Baku, is part of the generation of Azerbaijani artists who have gained recognition in recent years. For COSMOSCOW, Alakbarov produces a work that encompasses the entire booth, making it partially impenetrable to visitors. Called Cui Bono, the installation consists of ropes extending across the space to form a dense matrix. Lit from behind, the ropes form the message CUI BONO. A Latin phrase meaning ‘for whose benefit?’, Cui Bono represents a universal question about underlying motivations, in particular regarding conflict and war. The ropes that form the installation are hung limply, strung tightly and tied in nooses, suggesting the restraining, rescuing and murderous forms a rope can take on in a situation of conflict.

Founded in 2008, Cuadro Gallery, located in the Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC), has quickly become one of the UAE’s premier post-modern and contemporary art venues. Cuadro Gallery maintains four key areas of focus: exhibitions, education, residency and consultation. Cuadro’s curated exhibitions provide audiences with an opportunity to experience diverse approaches to and executions of art. These exhibitions are enhanced by the Education Program at Cuadro, comprised of lectures, workshops and panel discussions that present an academic avenue through which to understand and participate in the evolving art market. The Residency at Cuadro offers a select group of artists studio space, accommodation, career mentoring and exhibition opportunities in the UAE. The artists, both local and international, are often also provided the opportunity to exhibit the work they have created at Cuadro at the end of their residency.

YAY Gallery is delighted to announce its forthcoming exhibition, ‘Meeting Point’ taking place at Cuadro Gallery, Dubai, as part of Cuadro and YAY’s gallery collaboration. The exhibition brings together the work of four key Azerbaijani artists who have come to international attention in recent years. Rashad Alakbarov, Orkhan Huseynov, Aida Mahmudova, Nazrin Mammadova and Farid Rasulov will exhibit new work across a range of media including painting, installation and sculpture exploring themes of memory, home and tradition during an era of rapid modernization and globalization in Azerbaijan.

Chingiz Babayev’s four large-scale sculptures have been specially commissioned for the fair. Made out of wax, the sculptures are improvised, with elements that resemble knuckles and fingers. The artist was trained in Socialist Realism during the Soviet era and he sees the hand as a symbolic subject; it is a reference to the ‘manual’ labourer repeatedly depicted in art of that period. By deconstructing the hand’s elements the artist addresses its past symbolism. Chingiz Babayev is a multi-disciplinary artist, working in sculpture, painting, drawing, installation, video and performance. He represented his country at the Azerbaijan Pavilion for the Venice Biennale in 2007 and 2013. In 2013 he was commissioned by YARAT (YAY’s founding, not-for-profit organisation) to create a public art project for the 2nd Baku Public Art Festival.
