The 17 SDGs and the related 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, covering all of the countries of the world, came into force at the beginning of 2016. The Global Sustainable Development Reports, produced every four years, will provide information to the UN’s High Level Political Forum, which is monitoring the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The aim of the indicators and scientific analyses used is to support decision-makers in reducing poverty and promoting sustainable development. The first report will be published in 2019.

The information is based on the missions' assessments and in some countries on purchased media monitoring.  The response rate was 62 out of Finland's 89 missions abroad. As to development cooperation, I want to see how we can best help developing countries get on their feet sustainably. I strongly believe that here, too, free trade and development of the private sector’s operating conditions in developing countries have an important role to play. Naturally assistance in the traditional sense is important in certain fragile countries and in specific sectors. In this regard, however, I don’t see any contradiction: the rule of law and good governance are the key words for investments, which in turn bring jobs. When at the same time we help countries to strengthen their tax base, they will be able to offer their citizens – girls and boys, women and men – basic services such as healthcare and education.

Last year, India’s economy grew by 7.5 per cent and the country is one of the fastest growing emerging economies. India has the world's largest renewable energy programme. Its ambitious goals concern not only renewables but also energy recovery from waste, circular economy, energy efficiency (e.g. full transfer to LED light bulbs) as well as reduction of emissions through skipping directly to electric vehicles, which requires, for example, major investments in a plug-in charging point network.

Export promotion visits are important particularly in markets where the state plays a strong role. There are still very many of these countries, especially outside Europe. Of course it should be remembered that one visit doesn’t solve everything. Also needed are clear plans, solid preparation as to where export promotion visits should head and what the timetable should be and, especially, follow-up of the leads acquired during meetings. In this follow-up work, Team Finland can and should support enterprises, but it is good to remember that, in the end, enterprises themselves make deals.

India’s economy last year grew by 7.5 per cent, and the country is among the fastest growing of the emerging economies. India is the world’s third largest consumer of energy and at the same time the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases. India ratified the Paris Agreement on climate change at the beginning of October. The goal the country has set for itself is to produce 40 per cent of its energy by domestic new and renewable energy sources by the year 2030, and to raise the production capacity of solar energy from 8 GW to 100 GW by the year 2022. The volume of the trade in goods between Finland and India last year was EUR 754 million, of which exports amounted to EUR 443 million and imports to EUR 311 million. In the peak year, 2011, trade in goods reached EUR 1.3 billion. Alongside trade in goods, there is significant trade in services. About 100 Finnish enterprises operate in India.
