Kenanga is a fast growing evergreen tree up to 2-5 m per year when young, with an average height of 12 m and a maximum height of 25-30 m. In culture, it may be pruned at 2-3 m. The tree has a single trunk which is usually slightly curved. The bark is smooth and gray to silvery-white. The leaves are dark green, 20 cm long, alternate, simple, oblong elliptical and slightly hairy with a prominent midrib and drooping tip. The flower hangs from a long branch (2.5 to 5 cm), with six small greenish yellow (rarely pink) petals. It provides a highly fragrant essential oil. Flowering occurs all year round but more profusely when it is hot and humid.
