There are even discos that don’t let darker skinned people in, but if they are with the upper class whites it is ok. The upper class when dealing with different classes are kind and helpful, but will not attempt to develop friendships with people who do not live a similar lifestyle.

They usually only follow their own regulations and "patriarcas" (head of each family) and refuse to live according to any central national government laws or to any of the western standards like housing, jobs or education. Because of the huge differences with the "payo" (majority) culture, people are usually scared and consider them thieves, pocket lifters and tend to discriminate them in job opportunities, housing or education. Their way of life inside a western culture does not help to adjust and get money or a comfortable life, which has contributed to young gypsies suffering more the effects of drug addiction and the criminal world related to it. This hasn’t helped in their integration in society despite huge efforts all the democratic governments in Spain have done to approach this community.

Therefore gazing at the shoulder level or the forehead is a polite way of avoiding such a confrontation. Shoes are best without backs so that they can be slipped on and off easily at people’s homes. In the ministries, and other public buildings, you do not have to remove your shoes. Men wear western clothes and corporate suits in all public service offices as well as on the streets. However, you may be invited to a student party or an elegant French restaurant and find yourself to be the only one in such garb; everyone else is in jeans or European fashions.

Curiously, the idea came from the American side, who put it forward as an alternative to a proposal by Canada to promote exports of automobiles and automobile parts to the United States by duty withdrawal. The Americans said that this would look like subsidization of exports and would incur countervail; instead, why not have free trade between manufacturers? It wasn’t real free trade, of course, since consumers still had to pay duty on imports of automobiles from the United States. But it achieved its purpose.

The biggest stereotype that maybe held about New Zealand is the relationship between Pakeha (European descent) and Maori (native). It is a very different relationship to that of Native people and European descendents in Canada. Maori is a very accepted and integrated way of life in New Zealand, and it will be beneficial to have some understanding of the culture as you will be working and living amongst people from Maori descent. There are definitely challenges and problems with both cultures acceptance of each other which goes back to the Treaty of Waitangi – the singing of the treaty in 1840 by British representatives and Maori Chiefs. It will serve you well to have an understanding of these issues.
