Because of the huge differences with the "payo" (majority) culture, people are usually scared and consider them thieves, pocket lifters and tend to discriminate them in job opportunities, housing or education. Their way of life inside a western culture does not help to adjust and get money or a comfortable life, which has contributed to young gypsies suffering more the effects of drug addiction and the criminal world related to it. This hasn’t helped in their integration in society despite huge efforts all the democratic governments in Spain have done to approach this community.

People are comfortable being physically close and touching or hugging. Shaking hands is a normal greeting and women may kiss each other on the cheek. If someone is not comfortable to shake your hand, they will keep their hands over their heart or in a praying position. It is common for strangers to ask “white” westerners (‘buleh’) for a photo and comfortably put their arms around you as if you are old friends. It is not acceptable or expected that young Indonesian men touch young western women, even though they may like to have a photo with them.

The biggest stereotype that maybe held about New Zealand is the relationship between Pakeha (European descent) and Maori (native). It is a very different relationship to that of Native people and European descendents in Canada. Maori is a very accepted and integrated way of life in New Zealand, and it will be beneficial to have some understanding of the culture as you will be working and living amongst people from Maori descent. There are definitely challenges and problems with both cultures acceptance of each other which goes back to the Treaty of Waitangi – the singing of the treaty in 1840 by British representatives and Maori Chiefs. It will serve you well to have an understanding of these issues.

When the Pearson government took office in 1963, one of the early developments was the negotiation of the automotive agreement with the United States. Curiously, the idea came from the American side, who put it forward as an alternative to a proposal by Canada to promote exports of automobiles and automobile parts to the United States by duty withdrawal. The Americans said that this would look like subsidization of exports and would incur countervail; instead, why not have free trade between manufacturers? And so it came about, with excellent results for our export trade and for the companies concerned, particularly those located in Canada, all of whom were American owned. It wasn’t real free trade, of course, since consumers still had to pay duty on imports of automobiles from the United States. But it achieved its purpose.

Dress, too, is very important and another piece of advice to women is to go to the Morning Market in Vientiane and buy a "sin" which is the Laotian skirt, a colourful and very useful garment worn by Laotian women everywhere. Unlike some cultures where the wearing of local dress is considered an offense, it is the very opposite in Laos. Western clothes may be worn as well, but Laos is a rough country; the roads are bad and dust is everywhere. If you don’t have a car, you have to get in and out of "tuk tuks" so you need flexibility in clothing and modesty as well. It is preferable not to wear short skirts and sleeveless blouses. Shoes are best without backs so that they can be slipped on and off easily at people’s homes. In the ministries, and other public buildings, you do not have to remove your shoes. Men wear western clothes and corporate suits in all public service offices as well as on the streets. However, you may be invited to a student party or an elegant French restaurant and find yourself to be the only one in such garb; everyone else is in jeans or European fashions.

Generally, the whiter your skin, the higher the class you are, and vice versa for being darker. Being white is considered a mark of beauty. As time goes on and you become quite familiar with those around you, you could relax and dress casually, but initially at least dress formally. Use the prefix Mr. or Miss or Mrs. when addressing anyone at the office, including your boss, co-workers and staff. After you get to know them better, you could call them by their first names when the occasion presents itself. However, do use the formal title and Mr. or Mrs. when addressing them in public. You could call them in such manners until he or she asks you to call them by their first names.
