Christiane Rousseau studied mathematics at the Université de Montréal, where she obtained her Ph.D. in 1977. After completing postdoctoral studies at McGill, she returned to Université de Montréal as a professor. Throughout her career, she worked simultaneously on her research and outreach activities. For instance, she gave conferences at CEGEPs and organized mathematics camps. In 2000, for the World Mathematical Year, she organized the "Opération Métro 2000" which involved placing mathematics posters in the Montreal metro. She was President of the Canadian Mathematical Society from 2002 to 2004. Since 2011, she has held the position of Vice President of the International Mathematical Union. She initiated and is coordinating the thematic year on "Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013" (mpe2013.org).
