On May 26, a panel discussion moderated by Larry Milligan, Vice-President, Research of the University of Guelph was held to provide an overview of the spectrum of models of technology transfer offices and processes, techniques or methodologies used within each model to address: a) the assessment capability: market and marketing, cost and financing, and technology; b) technology portfolio administration; c) intellectual property management; d) the skill mix required for a technology transfer office; and e) measuring the performance of technology transfer offices and of technology transfer officers. Panel members included Natalie Dakers, University of British Columbia; Graham Taylor, Communications Research Centre; Beverley Sheridan, University Technologies International Inc. of the University of Calgary; Bernard Coupal, formerly of Innovatech of Greater Montreal; Chris Albinson, Newbridge Networks Corporation and Morrel Bachynski of MPB Technologies. Dr. Carty, President of the National Research Council (NRC), opened and closed the workshop; Jacques Lyrette, Vice President of the NRC gave the luncheon speech on May 26 and John Oliver, Past President of DowElanco Canada gave the keynote speech on May 27. Breakout sessions on May 26 focussed on assessment and technology portfolio administration and those on May 27 focussed on the skill mix required for a technology transfer office.
