Otoku su vrlo rano ime dali  grčki pomorci i trgovci koji su iz južnih kolonija, sa svojim proizvodima plovili u zemlju Ilira. Ime Ladesta tj. Ladeston ili Ladoston, Lastovo dobiva zbog sličnosti sa otokom Lado u Jonskom moru . Rimljani su otoku dali  svoj latinski naziv – Augusta Insula – Carski otok.
