The southern end of Route 46 links with NCN Route 47, which is close to Newport railway and bus stations. Running the length of the County Borough of Torfaen, from Cwmbran in the south to Blaenavon in the north, passing through Pontypool. Covering approximately 18 miles, the route has been designed for the enjoyment of cyclists and walkers, and in parts, horse-riders, hence it’s name the “Torfaen Leisure Route”.

It is important with Outcome Based Accountability that we use a common language so we understand how we are using terminology and jargon. When working with a range of people from different organisations, services and professional backgrounds, there is often different terminology and jargon used which can lead to confusion. For example, those working in a health profession often use patients while others could use clients or customers. When this occurs, it can be helpful to agree what words are going to be used by the group for a common understanding. The Common Language Tool helps to identify the concepts behind the different terminology and agree the words to be used by those people working together. The start of this walk takes you past what used to be a small Woollen Factory in the 1930s, which made flannel shirts for the miners. It was powered by water diverted from the Bran Brook. Some older locals still refer to this road as Factory Road, rather than by its present name of Upper Cwmbran Road. You will also pass the site of the old brickworks. It’s not in the public interest to pursue the offence – although these are minor offences, the levels of litter, dog mess etc are something that concern local residents, and Torfaen Council needs to respond to these concerns by making sure the law is enforced. The walk takes you across Chapel Lane. The lane is so called because Pontrhydyrun Baptist Chapel is situated at the top of the lane. As you emerge from the footpath onto Chapel Lane, the large house you see on the opposite side is Pontrhydyrun House, former home of the Conway family, who were the owners of the Edlogan Tinplate Works, which were situated nearby. They were a deeply religious family and they financed the building of the chapel in 1836. It is a very attractive building, built in the Greek classical style with an Ionic portico. The Conway family graves can be seen in the graveyard and the entrance to the churchyard is enhanced by a huge cedar tree. This magnificent specimen started life in Lebanon and was brought back to this country by the Conway family from a family holiday in the Holy Land.

The Community Infrastructure Levy (called 'the levy' or 'CIL') allows local planning authorities to raise funds from developers who are undertaking new building projects in their area. The funds raised will go towards infrastructure that is needed to support growth, such as schools and transport improvements. CIL is applied as a charge on each square metre of new floorspace created by the development, and different rates of charge are identified for different types of development, dependent upon how viable each type of development is. The money generated from CIL can be used to fund a wide range of infrastructure that that is needed to support growth in the area.

The Cwmsychan walk takes you through the site of ‘The British’ and the Cwmsychan Valley, an area which once featured a major ironworks. Built in 1826 by the British Iron Company, the ironworks was later sold in 1852 to the owners of the Ebbw Vale ironworks. A number of Listed Buildings exist to this day, including a Grade II Listed Cornish Engine House and Big Arch. Various other remnants of the ironworks and mining features are also of archaeological interest.
