O ran cydnabod oedolion hŷn mewn polisi neu strategaeth camddefnyddio sylweddau, mae Cymru ar y blaen o’i chymharu â’i chymheiriaid yn y DU, ond rydym yn gwybod bod mwy i’w wneud, gan gynnwys mynd i’r afael â rhagfarn ar sail oedran a stigma yn y boblogaeth hon sy’n cynyddu o ran ei maint.
The Welsh Government’s Advisory Panel on Substance Misuse’s February 2017 report on Substance Misuse in an Ageing Population included a number of recommendations.  In terms of acknowledging older adults in substance misuse policy or strategy, Wales is ahead of its UK counterparts – but we know there is more to be done including tackling ageism and stigma in this increasing population.

Mae Phil yn fy ffonio i’n aml i holi sut ydw i ac am yr hyn rydw i’n ei wneud. Mae o bob tro yno pan fydd pethau’n dechrau mynd yn drech a bod angen imi ofyn am gymorth, hyd yn oed os nad oes angen iddo wneud unrhyw beth.
Phil regularly calls me to touch base on where I’m up to and is always there when things get too much and I have to reach out, even when he probably doesn’t have to. Having Phil at the social services meetings has been an immense help.

Following a year of volunteering, training, and attending courses, and with the support of a peer mentor who had been through a similar situation, I gained the confidence to apply for a professional job for the first time in years.  I remember being very nervous, but thankfully — through the new skills I had learned and my new found self-belief — I was successful in my interview.

Rydw i’n mynd i’r clinig Anhwylder Straen Wedi Trawma (PTSD) unwaith y mis ac er ei fod yn anodd mae hefyd yn gyfle gwych i gael bod yng nghwmni’r bechgyn. Fe wnaeth hyn, ynghyd â chyngor Phil, fy annog i gymryd rhan mewn gwaith gwirfoddoli gyda’r grŵp Cofio Ein Harwyr trwy dacluso ac edrych ar ôl beddi cyn-aelodau’r lluoedd arfog.
I attend the PTSD clinic once a month which whilst it is hard is also a great opportunity to be around the lads. This encouraged me, on Phil’s advice, to get involved with volunteering for Remember our Heroes maintaining and cleaning up graves of ex-service personnel. I have only been out once doing this but it was nice to spend time with the lads and gave me a great sense of pride and achievement. I will therefore be attending as many as possible going forward.
