. A major advancement came in the 1690s when gunpowder was introduced into mining, although the hand driving of levels was to persist long after - as it was often cheaper to buy labour than powder. To use the powder, holes were “drilled” by hand with teams of men on hammers and a drill turner. The holes were then filled with powder, fused, capped with clay and lit. The burning powder forcibly expanded in the drilled hole splitting the rock.

The interpretation point is strategically placed along routes which are currently used by visitors. Both the Borth to Pontrhydfendigaid long distance footpath and the footpaths developed under another project funded by Spirit of the Miners passes near the chimney. Not only will the interpretation point add value to those visitors visiting the area for a specific reason but also to those visitors passing through the area on foot, on horseback or on a bike.

Tracing its roots back to early times, Talybont grew to become the village we see now in the later 18th Century. The mines that influenced Talybont were Alltycrib, Penpombren, Erglodd, Penybanc and Bwlchglas/Hafan. Further north, the A487 passes through the villages of Tre'r Ddol, Taliesin and Furnace, which were dependent on the Brynarian, Pensarn, Llancynfelin and Pwll Roman, Lovedon and Cwm Einion mines.

The Cistercians were noted for their skill in the extraction and processing of metals, especially, in this area, iron, lead and silver. They crushed and smelted the ores in industrial-scale mills and furnaces, powered by water-wheels, elements of which have already been located in the work done in 2004-5. However, the processing of these metals and their related technologies goes back to the early Bronze Age and the programme is examining prehistoric remains in the area.
