The best way to remove distrust between Iran and the West, Mousavian suggests, would be to cooperate on areas of common ground: “Cooperation on issues of common interest creates trust, and trust helps to solve disputes.” To him, the nuclear dispute should not overshadow all other aspects: “Iran is much more than just this. Shouldn’t both sides focus on other issues? Time has come to widen the scope.” This, he explains, has been Iranian standard policy since the 1990s but the West, according to him, has been refusing repeatedly and in the end has reduced all issues to one –a dead end. “The nuclear issue is an invented issue”, asserts Mousavian, “because Iran does not want the bomb.”

La millor manera d’acabar amb la desconfiança entre l’Iran i Occident, suggereix Mousavian, seria cooperar en àrees d’interès comú: «La cooperació en assumptes d’interès comú genera confiança, i la confiança ajuda a resoldre disputes.» Per a ell, la disputa nuclear no ha d’enfosquir tots els altres aspectes: «L’Iran és molt més que això. No s’ haurien de fixar en altres qüestions, ambdues parts? Ha arribat l’hora d’ampliar horitzons.» En això ha consistit, explica, la política estàndard iraniana des dels anys noranta però, segons ell, Occident s’hi ha anat negant repetidament i, al final, ha reduït tots els assumptes a un de sol: un carreró sense sortida. «La qüestió nuclear és una qüestió inventada», afirma Mousavian, «ja que l’Iran no vol la bomba.»
