  Francesco Vanni: L'Arte...
Vanni dipinse pale d'altare in tutte le chiese piu' importanti di Siena, e ricevette diverse commissioni anche a Roma, in particolare da Papa Clemente VIII, che lo scelse per una pala d'altare monumentale per la Basilica di San Pietro.
Francesco Vanni (1563/64–1610) was the most important artist in Siena at the turn of the 17th century and a key figure in Italian Counter-Reformation painting. His works combine dazzling technical virtuosity and brilliant coloring with the naturalistic approach to subject matter more famous in the works of his contemporaries Annibale Carracci and Caravaggio. Vanni created altarpieces in every important church in Siena, and he also received commissions in Rome, most notably from Pope Clement VIII for a monumental altarpiece for the Basilica of Saint Peter. The first monographic exhibition on this major artist, Francesco Vanni: Art in Late Renaissance Siena will include over 75 paintings and drawings by Vanni, as well as prints following his designs.
  PACEM IN TERRIS 50 ANNI...
One of the landmark documents of the 20th-century culture of peace is John XXIII’s encyclical Pacem in Terris. Fifty years after the death of Pope John XXIII – one of the major protagonists of the Twentieth century – the Italian Cultural Institute hosts a round-table to deepen, in the light of the current geopolitical setting, the evolution of theory and the practice of international relations, the programs and operational strategies of the Pacem in Terris (issued on April 11, 1963). This encyclical was addressed not only was to Catholic believers, but to “all the men of goodwill.” The panel will explore the meaning of Pacem in Terris and will focus on the negotiations as a means of conflict resolution and the respect of the fundamental human rights.Introduction H.E.   FROM GHETTO TO CAPPELLA
While the Inquisition raged throughout Counter-Reformation Italy, the ghetto walls that separated Gentile from Jew were more porous than impenetrable. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, we explore the cross-fertilization of Jewish and Catholic musical cultures that enriched the music of both synagogue and sanctuary. Works of Benedetto Marcello, Francesco Durante, Barbara Strozzi, Salomone Rossi, and unaccompanied Hebrew chants attest to a lively conversation, as do selections from the 1759 Hebrew libretto of Handel's Esther, commissioned by the Jewish community of Amsterdam in the year of the composer's death. The exquisite 1607 library of the Fabbri Mansion, transported from Urbania, Italy during World War I, sets the stage for an international ensemble who come together to perform a unique program of unexamined treasures.
