Born in Geneva in 1962, Philippe Meier attended the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne between 1981 and 1987, the year in which he qualified as an architect. For the next ten years or so, he practiced as a naval architect in partnership with Sébastien Schmidt, the two sharing the Bourse Fédérale des Arts Appliqués in 1993. After gaining experience in Geneva (with Jean-Marc Lamunière and Brodbeck & Roulet), Lausanne (Atelier Commun) and Rome (Alessandro Anselmi), he set up as an independent architect based in Geneva and Coppet (Vaud) in 1990. Philippe Meier was assistant to Professor Patrick Mestelan in the Architecture Department of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne between 1990 and 2000. From 2003 onwards, he has held successive visiting professorships at the Schools of Architecture in Strasbourg, Nancy and Lyon, and the Architecture Section of the EPFL. He also edited the magazine Archimade between 1993 and 1998, and continues to write for the international magazine Area. He is an occasional contributor to publications such as Matières (LTH-EPFL), AS (Architecture Suisse) and Werk, Bauen und Wohnen.
Philippe Samyn’s architectural and engineering design approach is based on questioning, which can be summarised as a “why” methodology. The firm approaches projects openly to all sorts of possibilities whilst listening closely to its clients demands. The project process is a constant strive to assimilate in an optimal way the large number of diverse factors to be taken into consideration, and to integrate them in such a way as to increase the architectural coherence of the project. Designing consists in making use of the many new understandings in the field of materials, ecology, structures. In the first place, Samyn and Partners aims to conceive intelligible and relevant constructions that transform complexity into clarity. The making of buildings is and remains the art of building : a captivating process through which one continuously seeks to situate a particular building act into a broader theoretical research.
