Seiriol Davies said, "I grew up on Anglesey, the island on top of Wales, where there’s a spangly palace called Plas Newydd, ancestral seat of the Marquises of Anglesey. I used to make my parent take me there a lot. There were busts and paintings honouring the 1st Marquis, the 2nd, the 3rd, the 4th. Then of the 5th… there was a laminated printout of a handful of pictures in the back porch above the doormat. Because this guy was ‘different’. Google ‘Henry Cyril Paget’ and you’ll see what I mean; he looks like Freddie Mercury on his way to Elton John’s house wearing most of Elizabeth Duke. I used to look at that lost face peering out from all the bling and although I wasn’t flamboyant at all (I had a Garfield sweater and arctic camo combats) I identified with him. This isn’t some ‘poor little rich boy’ story, it’s about wanting to be part of the world, and the feeling not necessarily being mutual. And what the dickensy heck would it mean to have your whole life judged invalid?"

Shirin Neshat examines the theme of love through the lenses of gender, as established and enforced since the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran. In her two-channel video work, Fervor, 2000, Neshat seems not only to highlight the frustration and helplessness of Iranian women in this paradigm, but also to demonstrate how the negative view of love within the revolutionary culture affects natural human feelings.

There’s something extraordinary about people who stare at the cosmos through their domestic telescopes. About 250,000 homes in Wales – some 20% of the housing stock – are in the worst F and G categories for energy ratings. It’s estimated that over half of our lofts have less than 150mm of insulation, well below the 270mm recommended by building regulations. Poorly insulated homes use up lots of energy and cost homeowners a small fortune to run as well as being bad for the planet. The UK Government’s Green Deal programme aims to offer every home in the UK an energy saving refurbishment by 2030 to help reduce carbon emissions and help tackle climate change.

It explores one way in which our art form can respond to the contemporary world. Opera has a tradition of bringing many media together. This project exists in a moment of profound technological change – felt directly in the media we use, and visible in the accelerating role they play in the political realm. Occupation is a kind of interception – making space for moments of artistic response to these unresolved situations, and moments of public response in turn."

The festival takes over the whole town of Lorient for 10 days, with spectacular concerts in the town’s football stadium, a major Parade of the Celtic Nations to some 30,000 spectators, gigs in a variety of halls and marquees around the seafront, and entertainment on the streets that creates a vibrant and distinctive atmosphere that is hard to match. In all, there are some 200 events and shows with 5,000 performers on the bill – all immersing themselves in Celtic culture.
