Water, for a city like Chicago, is a precious resource, but one-fourth of its pipeline system is nearly 100 years old, and plagued by leaks and breakdowns. That’s why Chicago is updating its water infrastructure as well as its public transport. The city is currently substituting 1,450 kilometres of water pipes and 1,080 kilometres of sewer lines piece by piece so that it can completely replace the current network by 2054. It’s an impressive project because it reduces waste to zero, protects the city from river floods and guarantees efficient management of both drinking water and waste water.

The train, operated by the state railway company China Railway Construction Corp (CRCC), crosses nine countries: China, Kazakistan, Russia, Byelorussia, Poland, Germany, Belgium, France and the United Britain. It is a journey of 12,000 kilometres with a number of stops, given the need to change trains because of the different gauges of the tracks along the way. The expansion of the Panama Canal (built by an international consortium led by Salini Impregilo) represents a great instigator of development because, as of this summer, the new Canal will be able to receive Post-Panamax ships that carry up to 14,000 containers. In the world’s shipyards, there are 450 of this type under construction and ports in the Americas are preparing themselves to receive them. Miami, New York, and Norfolk in the United States have launched development plans while those in Central America and the Caribbean are adopting similar measures such as Mariel in Cuba and Kingston, Jamaica. Panama’s two commercial ports - Colon and Balboa – are obviously following suit. They each handle an average of three million containers a year.
