Contemporaneamente, Wiese ha scansionato a intervalli regolari i campioni di neve ai raggi X con l’aiuto del tomografo computerizzato. Sono state così create immagini 3D dei vari stadi di metamorfismo della neve.

The researcher used a new device, the Snowbreeder 5 (Fig. 2) developed at the SLF, to expose snow samples to different temperature conditions in the lab, while a weight placed on the samples brought about settling at the same time. A laser measured the extent to which the snow settled. Mareike also scanned the samples at regular intervals using an X-ray CT scanner. The 3D images produced in this way depicted the snow structure as it was changing.

Grâce à un nouvel appareil développé par le SLF, le Snowbreeder 5 (photo 2), la chercheuse a soumis des échantillons de neige à différentes conditions de température en laboratoire, tandis qu’un poids appliqué sur l’échantillon entraînait le tassement de la neige. Ce tassement était mesuré à l’aide d’un appareil à laser. Parallèlement, Mareike Wiese a scanné à intervalles réguliers l’échantillon de neige en l’exposant à des rayons X dans le tomographe informatisé. Cette opération a permis d’obtenir des images 3D révélant le changement de structure de la neige.

Mit einem neuen, am SLF entwickelten Gerät, dem Snowbreeder 5 (Abb. 2), setzte die Forscherin Schneeproben unterschiedlichen Temperaturbedingungen im Labor aus, während ein Gewicht auf der Schneeprobe zur Setzung führte. Ein Laser mass die Setzung des Schnees. Gleichzeitig scannte Wiese die Schneeprobe in regelmässigen Zeitabständen mit Röntgenstrahlung im Computertomograph. Dadurch entstanden 3-D-Bilder der sich verändernden Schneestruktur.
