Bernardo learned his trade from his brother-in-law and began a career in the canning industry. His job was to purchase anchovies and north coast tuna from the coastal fishermen in the harbours, and, using pickle and wooden barrels to preserve the fish, he was able to sell them the following day throughout the north of the region of Castile.

Bernardo apprend le métier avec son beau-frère et se lance dans le monde des conserves. Il se rend sur les quais pour acheter aux pêcheurs de la côte les anchois et les thons germons et, grâce aux possibilités offertes par l’escabèche et les fûts de bois, la conserve de poisson est vendue dès le lendemain dans tout le nord de la Castille.
